Viewbook & VIDEO | the college of New jersey

The first few times I set foot on TCNJ's campus, something was off.
People smiled at me. Students held doors open. Passing faculty and staff said ... hi. While the college's reputation as a state academic powerhouse  — harder to get into than Rutgers, New Jersey's state flagship university — is well established, its sunny character and pristine campus have been harder to convey. In advance of a broader college branding initiative, our marching orders were to convey the distinctive feeling of the college in text and video.

One and all Campaign | Drew University

"What agency created this?" asked a principal from Development Guild, referring to materials for One And All: The Campaign for Drew. He posed this question to the university's advancement VP Kenneth Alexo Jr.

A quick-witted wearer of bow ties, Alexo had chosen to adopt the One And All slogan for Drew's campaign, which I initially conceived as Drew Magazine cover text. From that I developed language for the campaign collateral — website, video, brochure, postcards, and correspondence. By its close in June 2016, One And All had raised $85.4M from 14,001 donors.

Assignment: Nail the answers to three ginormous questions about college
Can I get a job? Can I get into graduate school? Can I afford this? That's the direction TCNJ gave Art Director Kelly Andrews and me for this no-frills project. Her crisp design and her choice of a nontraditional card size got the project noticed. The Office of Admissions reported that these cards — companion pieces to the college's viewbook — were the first at the college to ever rouse a compliment.

Kome Together: INFOGRAPHIC

How was I going to feature a student paper proposing that John Lennon suffered from borderline personality disorder? I thought my best tactic was to stall. Miraculously a second paper emerged. And it questioned whether Ivan the Terrible was, in fact, terrible due to mental illness! Bingo. All I needed now was the fevered imagination of illustrator Eric Nyquist.

The D.C-based Council for the Advancement and Support of Education blessed "Kome Together" with its 2017 Gold award for Illustration. The judges commented: "The references are hilarious. The iconography is simply great. The art is unexpectedly quirky and breaks the mold."

Drew Magazine, Drew University

"I loved this magazine as soon as I opened it, and the more I dug into it, the better it got," said an emotionally generous award judge. Under my direction, Drew Magazine won back-to-back gold national awards from the Washingon-D.C.-based Council for the Advancement and Support of Education: first for the magazine as a whole, then for design. "The judges were unanimous in their praise of the gold medalist, Drew. They were smitten with Drew's winning blend of whimsy and gravity, visual panache and quality writing."

TCNJ Magazine | Fall 2016

Let's be honest. I couldn't do what I do with magazines without striking and compelling photography. For a cover story on 49ers president Al Guido's speedy rise in the NFL, I knew I wanted more than an account of his career trajectory. I found the relationships he formed in college — and kept alive — just as important, so when we found out his TCNJ football teammates would be at a surprise party for him, we quickly dispatched photographer Bill Cardoni. See the moment on page 33.

TCNJ Magazine | Winter 2017

I want my magazines to be highly readable and visually arresting. But there's another worthy goal to consider: Magazine stories can help communities find common purpose. I'm proud of how this issue's cover story on TCNJ's Trenton Makes Music project is helping to tease out the city's place in American music history. City resident Sarah Dash of the legendary group, LaBelle — remember Itchi gitchi ya ya da da? — also makes for a damn fine cover, don't you think?

TCNJ Magazine | SPRING 2017

Could we show how students change between convocation and commencement? That's the goal we set with a feature spotlighting around a dozen students from the Class of 2020. We'll check back with them in upcoming issues as the nation closes in on this milestone decade.

not afraid to play

This survey lived on Drew University's admissions website to clue in prospective students to the welcome statistic that 95% of its student body receives financial aid. But the survey also pursued some less traditional data points — the number of compliment givers and tongue-rollers you could expect to find here — gives a subtle nod to the idea that taking some of the starch out of an institution helps people remember it.

Give text worship the day off

While at Drew University, I absorbed a ginormous amount of its culture.
I mentioned my interest in showcasing insider nuggets to our design firm, Thirst. Their suggestion: Pair a clever image with a caption — and you're done. We created 35 of these, one for every major on the undergraduate admissions website.
